HUNTERS JOIN TOGETHER FOR A SOLUTION TO MOOSE TAG LOTTERY

2006-10-01       Post a Comment | Read Comments (4 Posts)

Gilles Bisson and MP Charlie Angus met with angry moose hunters in Timmins yesterday. The meeting was the second in a series to deal with the flawed moose tag lottery. A meeting was held earlier this year in Iroquois Falls.

Bisson didn’t promise the crowd miracles. “Listen I am not going to stand here and say yes changes will be made tomorrow. But we can’t get changes if we don’t begin to stand up and unite.”

Angus says hunters need to speak as one. “We need to start thinking how governments work. They see the lottery as a cash cow and we need to tell them there’s money to be lost if the system doesn’t change.”gilles and charlie moose timmins

Angus also pushed the crowd to speak as one. “Governments will listen to large groups more so than just fragmented angry hunters. We need to think about making this large scale.

Iroquois Falls resident Roger Parent initiated the meetings. “Hunters everywhere are frustrated and many are leaving the sport. That means less dollars for merchants and tourism. I tried to put together a consensus of ideas that may work better.”

Several proposals were made including going closer to the Quebec model. Those include:

  • 4-hunters per tag, possibly only 2.
  • Better monitoring of kills including mandatory reporting.
  • Shut down certain unit or restrict tag numbers if population drops.
  • Shorten season to 3 or 4 weeks.
  • Make northern Ontario north of Parry Sound at least.
  • Calves are off limits

Bisson and Angus will continue to collect data and will bring results to Queen’s Park and Parliament Hill this fall. Your ideas or suggestions can be left on either website.

I am all for a revamp to the present moose lottery "scam", it almost seams that if you apply for a tag out of town, you get a tag. I go on a deer hunt in the Kenora district every second year and at the same time we also apply for a moose tag in that unit (7b) we apply as a group of two and 90% of the time we get a tag. The ironic part of this tag system is that there are more moose in my back yard (unit 29) than there is in the Kenora area (7b) and this is evident just by the amount of moose tracks I have encounter in these two units when I am in the outdoors. So yes I would support a revamp to the system which would allow me to hunt closer to home, I would support a system that would be similar to Quebec or NFLD's

Thanks Bob,

When I first started hunting at 16 yrs of age, I got my first cow tag. I am now 33 yrs old and haven't had one since that time. I'll agree that this system sucks real bad.
I called the MNR about 4 years ago to have them explain to me why I had not had a tag all these years. She told me well you are in pool 1 but, if you want one garanteed to apply as a group. Myself and the others of my gang applied as a group and still did not receive one. We applied the following year single again knowing we would be back in pool 2 and have to work our way back up the ladder again.
There are guys in my gang who have not had a tag for over 25 yrs. Now that's just B.S and something has to be done.
I hunt in 42 which is 4 hrs South of Iroquois falls and I have no extra luck in getting a tag even having my address up north. My cousin applied 3 yrs in a row to area 42 and prior to that he applied in Temagami. He has had no luck. The only thing that everyone knows about St Charles is the big bust last year where a bunch of Polish guys from Toronto got caught poaching and MNR found so many remains of moose on there land and some.

I would like to say hats off to the guy who discovered that MNR issued tags in his name and never received them, You discovered something big.
I know for a fact that there are guys in the area I hunt get a tag every year and 2 year, Is this fixed???. One guy got a tag the following of hunting just because he found a dead moose and reported it to MNR.

I have a uncle who is 100% native and lives on a reserve. I wonder If he applies to MNR for a a MOOSE tag,,,, would HE GET ONE. I bet you he would! This is example of how srewed up this lottery system is.

So we can thank the MNR for all the calf tags we got. Oups, SORRY!, the MNR says thanks to me and all of you for all the contribution to their wage and pensions.

Sincerely yours,

A very pist off hunter.

Moose Tag Allocation
Posted by: Mark, Coniston Ont.

First and formost, I would like to thank Gilles Bisson, Charlie Angus, and Roger Parent for their time and efforts as to initiating this long overdue "professional" approach , in trying to establish a forum with ethical moose hunters province wide regarding the very unpopular, unfair and extremely mis-managed moose tag allocation (lottery) system we expeirence here in Ontario.
On behalf of myself and thousands of other moose hunters (who I hope will "jump on the band wagon") are hats (not to many of them orange, thanks to the M.N.R. lottery system)
are off to you.
I sincerely hope that Rod and Gun Clubs, small or big, in towns or cities pick up on what you have started via meetings, word of mouth or whatever to get the word out accross Ontario, that we as a whole are just plainly absolutly fed up and discouraged with the current lottery system in place, which is not working and which the M.N.R. is totally aware of ! It's time for the Ministry to step up to the plate, address our concerns and actually use any management skills they may posess to enhance our lottery system and make it a more fair and positive system for all concerned.
I've read the majority of other hunters comments posted to your site, and it seems the general concencous is we would (as a whole) like to see 4 to 8 hunters per adult moose harvested.I honestly think this is a realistic figure and would be achievable and accepted by the general moose hunting population, but I also think to make this senario achievable we (moose hunters,as a whole) would also have to stand together and " give-up " or "give-in" to a few of the hunting privaligises we are accustomed to now.
Obviously, this is my own opinion but in order for us all to be able to have a better oppertunity to hunt adult moose...I would like to know if other hunters would agree with me or disagree and why ?
The "give-ups" or "give-ins" in order to hunt adult moose "COULD" BE :
1) In order to apply for an adult moose tag,you "MUST" apply in a group of 4 or 6 or 8.
2) If you wish to apply as an individual, you apply and hunt "CALVES ONLY "
3) Hunters that apply in groups, and receive a adult tag,are allowed to hunt only the adult moose which the tag is allocated for. These hunters in this group "CANNOT" hunt "CALVES" ...unless the group does not receive a tag...but with this system they should.
4) Once the group of hunters fills their tag, their hunt is over. All members of the group "hang up their guns" and go hunt for birds.
5) Members of groups who are successful in filling their tag, "CANNOT" party hunt with any other group...ie you must hang up your gun...you are done for that year's moose hunt.
6) Shorten the moose season from six weeks to three weeks. (This in itself would benifit our moose population by less harvesting of all moose...cows,bulls and calves.
I like a lot of you hunters out there have not received a tag in many years .I've been moose hunting for 31 years and have received 1 tag. I am in a group of 8 and it is going to be 9 years next year our group of 8 hunters have not received a tag...but we have spent approximately $60,000.00 in the last 8 yrs.hunting for calves...and we even managed to get 1 in the last 8 years.
We have been seeing 6 to 13 adult moose each and every year we hunt, and I'm hearing the same from many more honest hunters out there.
If we all pitch in and are willing to make a few small sacrifices (as a whole) to enhance our moose lottery tag system, I honestly believe the M.N.R. will have to look at making revisions to the current system they have in place .
Who knows...with a revised system and better moose management protocol, we may even end up like our fellow hunters in Quebec and enjoy the same type of lottery system they have from year to year.
P.S.To my fellow hunters, the first step towards achieving a better moose tag lottery system is to get away from applying individually for adault moose. We are shooting ourselves in the foot right from the get go.Any down to earth, ethical moose hunter knows that 95 % of us hunt in groups and not alone...if I'm going to risk a heart attack taking a moose out of the bush...I know I want to be with my group !
Once again to Gilles,Charlie and Roger thanks again for getting us started on this long journey, keep up the good work, get this web site out there for all to view.Keep those meetings moving south to Sudbury area, and hopefully we can keep the information moving from here...

Change the way the moose tags are allocated
Posted by: David, Oakville

A couple of years ago I sent an email to the MNR, with this suggestion.
A group of 5 moose hunters should be issued one adult moose tag.
For ex: this year a tag would be issues in my name.
The next year a tag would be issued to another person’s name in my group and so on, until the fifth person in the group get’s a tag. Then it starts over again.
This way every person in the group receives a total of 5 adult tags over 25 years.
That means that every 5 years I would automatically be allegeable for an adult moose tag.
Reporting your results would be mandatory, or your group would be disqualified for the draw the following year. Hunting calf should be of limits.
The MNR Disagreed with this idea.
I think this system would be very fair for all moose hunters. Ps not all groups will be successful in the moose hunt. Not sure what the success rate is. Seems like I heard some ware that only 11% have success in harvesting a moose . That would leave lots of moose for future moose hunts. Does anyone know what the real success rate percentage is? I don’t think anyone knows for sure. Just my two cents worth.
Signed
Unsuccessful in the unfair moose draw.
